The Barrier Reef Takes Shape...

July 11, 2003 - Nearing completion, Boyds' newest Starlight Site at Franciscan Children's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts is finally taking shape. The space, once complete, will give the illusion of being at the Barrier Reef, complete with varying shades of blue wall tiles, fish designs on the carpet, and wave patterns on the floor. So far, the architects have constructed new walls, renovated a handicapped bathroom with the water motif, and installed half of the floor tiles in the hallways. The carpet is also down in the waiting room area. Work is still being completed on the new admitting area and the rest of the waiting room, and wall decorations and interactive stuff for kids have yet to be placed. Construction crews are targeting mid-August for completion with a grand opening ceremony slated for sometime in September.

For this 'beary' special project, we teamed up with the Boston Bruins and their wives to create an inviting environment for children at the hospital. Thanks to everyone who helped us raise the money to fund this room!

Check out the wave patterns on the floor of the hall!

Let's hope these fish don't bite…cuz you'll be steppin' on 'em in Boyds' new Starlight Site.

Barrier Reef Begins to Form!

April 25, 2003 - Construction offishully began March 30, 2003 on the Barrier Reef, the new Starlight Site Boyds and the Boston Bruins wives are funding at the Franciscan Children's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Crews have already moved a handicap bathroom and they are now tearing down walls. Construction is scheduled for 12 weeks, which would target completion for the first week in July. We are planning a grand opening ceremony sometime in August or September!

Spring Comes to "Hope Forest"!

February 27, 2003 - It may still be winter, but "Hope Forest," Boyds Starlight Site at Johns Hopkins Children's Center (JHCC) in Baltimore, Maryland, is already feeling the warm touch of Spring. With its towering trees and simulated caves, you can find all of our critters hangin' out in the trees or trying to stay warm in their caves. Hope Forest offishully opened in September 2002 with the help of Cal Ripkin Jr., Baltimore Orioles Future Hall-of-Famer, and his wife Kelly. And since opening, hundreds of thousands of people have already used the newly renovated lobby. It's the perfect spot for pediatric patients and their families to get away from everything and just relax. In this cozy refuge you can now meet all of our new friends; the Daisy Dews, the Cherrybearys, the Beezley's, the Sugarcones, and the Fishers, just to name a few.

Kamm puts the finishing touches on one of the caves.

Watch out for bugs in this forest…oops, they're not bugs, they're bears disguised as bugs!

The bears and hares take a rest after moving into their new homes.

The new bears are in place just in time for Johns Hopkins annual Radiothon. The 2003 Radiothon kicked off this morning at 5am in Hope Forest and continues live from the MIX 1065 (WWMX-FM) studio in Towson until Sunday, March 2 at 6pm. You can make a donation during Radiothon by calling 410/825-1065 or donate online at www.hopkinschildrens.org. All of the money raised during the Radiothon will benefit pediatric research and patient care at Johns Hopkins Children's Center.

Boyds Gets Ready to Explore
the Barrier Reef…in Boston?

December 18, 2002 - Since the opening of our first Starlight Site at Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore, Maryland, we've had too much time on our hands (just kidding!), so we decided it was time to start working on our next major project for Starlight and all those kids Starlight benefits (thanks to all of you we do have One Million dollars to work with). We asked Starlight to assist us in our search for the perfect location for our next Starlight playroom and they said they had just the place…the Franciscan Children's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Apparently the Boston Bruins wives had raised a significant amount of money for the room, but it wasn't quite enough to do everything they needed to do to improve the site. So, they asked if we'd be willing to help out! We, being the nice people that we are, automatically agreed (though I don't know who could say no to helping kids in need?)!

So, now we are in the process of working with the Boston Bruins wives and the Starlight Children's Foundation to bring The Barrier Reef to kids in Boston (the Barrier Reef is the theme for the area!). This site is more than just a room however, as you can see from the photos, the Barrier Reef theme will be used throughout the waiting room, entranceway, and even the hallways. But, there is a lot of work to be done before the Reef can come alive with all sorts of waves, fish, and of course Boyds Bears.

First they must move the administration area and utilize two dentistry rooms to create the large waiting room. Once completed, the waiting area will have a wave shaped overhang and wave patterns on the walls. The administration area will be moved across the hall from the waiting room, complete with cubicles and offices, and following the Barrier Reef theme! Even the entranceway will provide patients with the feeling of being underwater done in vivid blue hues. The architectural team will also transform the hallway with waves on the walls and colorful carpeting.

Check out the photos below for some 'Before' shots…you can use the model to see what the architects have in mind for the space. The project is slated for completion in May 2003. Look for more updates as construction gets under way.

This is a scaled down version of what the space will look like once transformed into the Barrier Reef.

This is a closer view of the Waiting and Administration areas.

The entranceway now shows Charlie Brown and all of his friends dancing on the walls, but once transformed, the area will give the feeling of being underwater.

The Administration area will be moved and the Barrier Reef waiting room will take its place.

The Hallway will have waves along the entire length of the wall, continuing the theme as the patients make their way to their rooms.

Cal and Kelly Ripken Unveil Teddy-Bear
Filled "Hope Forest" at Johns Hopkins Children's Center!

October 24, 2002 -

Pediatric patients at Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore, Maryland were treated to a 'beary' special surprise as Cal Ripken Jr., Baltimore Orioles Future Hall-of-Famer, and his wife Kelly cut the ribbon to "Hope Forest" on Wednesday, September 25, 2002. Thanks to Boyds, the old lobby has been transformed into a cozy refuge for patients and their families, complete with trees, caves, and plenty of Boyds critters. The newly renovated lobby will be known as Hope Forest, a gift from Boyds and Starlight, because it inspires hope to all who come to the hospital.

The ceremony went very quickly with a few words said by Dr. Dover, Head of Johns Hopkins; Kip Crennan, Starlight's President; Jean-André Rougeot, Boyds' CEO; and lastly by Cal and Kelly Ripken. The children were so excited by Cal's presence that immediately following the ribbon cutting, kids clamored to get autographs from him. The Ripkens also distributed baseball caps to all the children on-hand as well as those pediatric patients unable to leave their hospital beds. In all, the day was a beary big success. We know the Starlight Site will provide a wonderful distraction for the children and we hope the Boyds friends will help provide companionship and comfort in a time of need.

The new 'Hope Forest' lobby quickly filled up with kids as they anxiously awaited Cal Ripken, Jr.

Twelve-year-old Grayson Gilbert, a six-year pancreatic cancer survivor and JHCC patient helped Cal, Kelly, Kip Crennan (Starlight's President), Jean-André Rougeot (Boyds' CEO), and Dr. Dover (JHCC President) cut the ribbon during the opening ceremony.

Boyds Forest Almost Ready for Inhabitants!

September 9, 2002 - With towering trees, a simulated cave, and plety of Boyds critters, the waiting area of Johns Hopkins Children's Center (JHCC) in Baltimore, Maryland has been transformed into a cozy refuge for pediatric patients and their families. The Boyds forest lobby offishully opens Wednesday, September 25, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. Members of the Johns Hopkins staff will be on hand for the opening as well as several key Starlight employees and volunteers as well as some of the Folks from Boyds. Since the room is not quite done, here is a sneak peek of what's to come in just a few short weeks.

Here you see Kamm, one of our wunnerful Bear Crew, helping the animals get situated in the trees. They want to look good for the Grand Opening on the 25th. Right behind the tree on the right will be the video conferencing area where children that are too young to visit with patients on the floor or patients that are too sick to accept many visitors can see and hear their friends through a video image that is broadcast on Hopkins' closed-circuit TV channels.

There are 5 alcoves in the Forest which will hold several of our fabulous seasonal collections. Already Fall has set in at Boyds Forest.

The Forest lobby holds 5 trees and if you look high up in the branches, you'll be able to see all sorts of Boyds animals...everything from monkeys and owls to bears and cats!

While the Starlight Children's Foundation (R) routinely designs in-hospital playrooms though its Starlight Sites program, this is the first lobby project they have ever undertaken. We chose the area because it is the most highly-trafficked area in the hospital, accomodating 20,000 visitors per day.

Boyds Helps Raise Money for Johns Hopkins Hospital!

June 3, 2002 - On Sunday, June 2nd, some Folks at Boyds headed to WMAR-TV in Baltimore, MD for the Johns Hopkins Children's Miracle Network Telethon. During the 6:00-6:30 half hour, our Bear Crew took front row answering phones as people called in with pledges. Also during that time frame, Boyds' CEO, Jean-André Rougeot along with Andrew Norton, Starlight's representative, presented a check for $150,000 to Dr. Dover, Johns Hopkins representative. The money is going to fund the creation of a Starlight Site at Johns Hopkins. A Starlight Site is a fantasy-inspired playroom created to provide a place for pediatric patients and their families to relax, play, and interact with others while at the hospital. At this time, the Children's Lobby is already being transformed into Boyds Forest, or more popularly know as Sherwood Forest. Construction should be completed before summer is over.

Sunday's telethon raised more than a million dollars for JH. And, we are very proud to be one of the sponsors that help make things a little bit more 'bearable' for kids at Johns Hopkins. We look forward to broadcasting live from Boyds Starlight Site during next year's telethon.

Our Bear Crew man the phone bank for the telethon.
