| Ya know how The Head Bean insists on creating products that make ya laugh or sigh? Well that philosophy also applies to the future Boyds Museum and Store, called Boyds Bear Country. Just imagine...driving south along Business Route 15 towards Gettysburg.
|
You pass the town square and
keep going. About five miles later you come upon it...the
largest bank barn ever constructed in the Western Hemisphere
(or at least we think so!). We’re talkin’ a building that stands
100 feet high, with cupolas (one’s even lit at night!), a silo
(actually a water tank to service the building!),
stonework, and all the fixins you might find on
an old-fashioned Pennsylvania barn!Yer either
gonna sigh at its magnificence or chuckle with
delight...and that’s just what yer Ol’ Uncle Bean
hopes you do!
Why a barn complex? ’Cause the Folks at
Boyds wanted to build something that would fit
right into the countrylandscape and match
THB’s own farmin’ lifestyle! The facility will sit
on 135 acres of farmland, with breathtaking
views of the surrounding rolling hills and val-leys
and Marsh Creek, which runs through the
property. Kinsley Construction and LSC Design
out of York, Pennsylvania, were contracted to
design and build the facility and based their
design on traditional southern Adams County
farm homesteads.

Ready to take a little tour of the museum? Better put on
yer walking shoes, ’cause we have 100,000 square feet of floor
space to cover! When you first enter the property from Route
15, you’ll pull into a humungous parking lot with 500 spaces
for cars and 40 spaces for tour buses and RVs. At the
entrance to the complex, visitors will come across a park-like
setting in which a slightly larger-than-life-size bronze statue
of The Head Bean will be displayed (a great place to snap a
photo or two of friendsand family!). The world-famous sculptor
Sandy Proctor from Tallahassee, Florida, has been commis-sioned
to create the sculpture. (To see his work, log onto
http://www.wsproctor.com/about.htm).
When you first enter, yer standin' in the lobby
area, which includes a welcome center, a gift shop with Boyds-style
souvenirs and trinkets, a package check area, a First Aid
Facility, and even a Nursing Area for new mommies (we
wanna make you folks feel at home!).
This first floor also contains the Boyds Museum (and it's free, folks!), which
will feature an overview of THB’s life and the development
of the company.
After you visit the museum, don’t forget to check out
the special event area, which will feature a vaulted ceiling
that extends to the third floor, a stone fireplace, large windows
that offer spectacular views of the countryside, and (during the
holiday season) a huge Christmas tree display. The special event
area will also be the location of dance, theatrical, and musical
performances.
Wanna place to people watch? Head to the
second floor, where you can look down upon
the lobby and special event areas below! The
second floor will also offer tons of shopping
options for visitors.
If yer an F.o.B., you’ll wanna make a beeline
for the F.o.B. Lounge. That will be located on the
third floor and offer our very special collectors’
club members a place to kick back and relax. The Folks at Boyds will offer special presentations and other benefits just for F.o.B.s in the lounge.
On each level of the Boyds complex, you will find Boyds
products for sale...resin, plush, home décor, Wills Creek...,
HC Accents, holiday stuff....everything Boyds offers and then
some! Look for a wide assortment of licensed products and
museum exclusives that will change with the seasons.
And that’s just the beginning! We have so many ideas for
future projects, we don’t know where to begin! Like a working
farm with room for Christmas trees, a pumpkin patch, a straw-berry
patch, a corn maze, and even a petting zoo that features
rare and heritage breeds of farm animals; an enchanted bear
garden; and natural grassland and wetland preserves.
Construction has already begun and the complex is slated
to open in Fall 2002. The Folks at Boyds invite one and all
to come visit next year. You’ll see Boyds in a way it’s never
been presented before, meet friends ya never knew you had,
and walk away with memories to last a lifetime. And that’s a
guarantee from The Head Bean and the Folks at Boyds to you
and yours!

What event is believed to have inspired the teddy bear?
Teddy Roosevelt’s hunting trip to Mississippi in November of 1902.
Teddy and his entourage didn’t see hide nor hair of a bear, so a few
folks rustled up a bear cub, tied it to a tree, and offered it to Teddy
for target practice. Bein’ a tenderhearted fella, Teddy refused. A
political cartoonist, Clifford Berryman, celebrated the event in
“Drawing the Line in Mississippi,” a cartoon that appeared in The
Washington Post. Folks fell in love with the little bear character, and
soon after a stuffed toy version of the bear appeared on the market.
