It's American Nostalgia at it's Finest!
You heard it right folks, the classic artistry of Norman Rockwell's nostalgic illustrations as featured on the covers of The Saturday Evening Post are now personified...or should we say, "bear"sonified by your favorite furry Bearstone(R) friends!
Recognized as "America's most beloved illustrator," 20th Century artist Norman Rockwell was most famous for his illustrations of everyday life scenarios created for The Saturday Evening Post. Over a 47 year span, Rockwell published a total of 322 original covers for the Saturday Evening Post each capturing an idealistic and sentimental portrayal of American life. Author and art curator Christopher Finch most eloquently describes Rockwell's art as "a world that, because of its traditional elements, seems familiar to all of us, yet is recognizably his and his alone. His career has been an ode to the ordinary, a triumph of common sense and understatement."
Now, in memory of Rockwell's timeless masterpieces Boyds has partnered with the folks at The Saturday Evening Post to recreate the classic, heart-felt depictions of every day moments in American life that Rockwell so beautifully captured. Rockwell's painstaking eye for detail in his illustrations is mirrored in each Saturday Evening Post Norman Rockwell Bearstone. Norman Rockwell's illustrations often feature heartfelt and humorous moments that, Boyds VP of All Stuff Marketin' & Design, David Miller says "align seamlessly with the Boyds personality" making the partnership a match made in heaven! Each Saturday Evening Post Norman Rockwell Bearstone includes a miniature resin frame with an image of the original Saturday Evening Post cover illustration.
"Before the Shot" illustrates one of Rockwell's most famous paintings in which a young bear humorously waits with his trousers partway down, intently staring at the certificates on the wall, while the doctor prepares to inject the innocent patient with a shot. The Saturday Evening Post Norman Rockwell Bearstone beautifully captures each detail of Rockwell's original painting with its own unique interpretations from the open stitches on the doctors coat and pant-leg to the expressions, characteristic of classic Boyds Bearstones, on each bear face.
"Girl at the Mirror" features an expressive interpretation of Rockwell's illustration of an introspective girl looking into a mirror and holding a woman's magazine while her childhood doll is cast aside. This Bearstone captures Rockwell's bittersweet moment with incredible detail throughout the braided rug, cosmetic tools and the framed mirror propped intentionally against a wooden dresser. A unique spin on Rockwell's original painting allows the viewer to see the young bear's reflection from different angles empowering viewers to create their own interpretations of the bear's inflections as she gazes into the mirror.
"Doctor and the Doll" is a heartwarming scene featuring a sweet little girl bringing her teddy for a check-up at the doctors. The Bearstone beautifully captures the heartfelt intentions of Rockwell's original painting with an expressive look of concern on the little girls face and the jovial kindness upon the doctors'. Rockwell's eye for detail is uniquely expressed throughout this Bearstone from the little girls plaid dress and doll clothes folded under her arm to the doctor's impressive dresser stacked with books, picture frames and candle sticks.
"Little Spooners" uniquely interprets Rockwell's darling illustration of two young lovers gazing at a sunset while an adorable puppy sits behind them with fishing gear strewn about the ground. Rockwell's original illustration is a view from behind the young couple leaving the expressions and facial features up to the viewer's imagination. The Saturday Evening Post Norman Rockwell Bearstone however, allows collectors to see the heartwarming scene from all angels, including the loving expressions of the couple sharing their special moment together.
The first four of many Saturday Evening Post Norman Rockwell Bearstones will be available at your favorite Boyds Bear Retailers this year. Stay tuned for more details of their offishul release!
